Boomers Everywhere are Facing the Glory of the Olympics

41-year-old Dara Torres has proven what I've been saying all along. Women over 40 are on the move and making a difference! Dara's outstanding performance in this year's Olympics has been an inspiration to me so at 51, I'm prepared to make history along side her. Baby Boomer Divas Rule! Check out the video:

A Baby Boomer's Review of the Iron Man Movie

Last night my husband and I went to see the movie Iron Man with Robert Downey, Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwynneth Paltrow.

My husband had been saying he's like to see it because Iron Man was one of his favorite comic book heroes when he was a child. Now, he knows I am NOT a fan of comic book hero movies so he was quite surprised that I suggested we see it. I figured it's the least I could do since he's always going to see the "chick flicks" I want to see. Besides, I could always say it was an early anniversary gift since our second wedding anniversary is coming up in a few days.

I actually ENJOYED the movie! Although it dragged for the first 30 minutes or so, I could get into the storyline and it held my attention. Robert Downey, Jr. played a self-absorbed millionaire who inherited his father's weapons company empire but got a rude awakening after being held captive for three months in the Middle East. I've never been a fan of Downey's but I must admit I was impressed with his acting in the movie.

Gwynneth played the faithful assistant. I've never been a fan of hers either but I appreciated her acting talent in the movie.

I can't say enough about Terrence Howard. It's like that role was made for him. It's a shame he doesn't get more opportunities to display his talent range.

I almost didn't recognize Jeff Bridges. He looks a lot different than you would expect in this movie. He played the bad guy.

To my fellow baby boomer divas, if you're looking for something to do for a "date night" take your partner to see Iron Man. Take it from one who had a good time seeing her man enjoy watching one of his favorite comic book heroes.

Baby Boomer Divas on the Move in Daytona Beach

I've been back home a few days after spending several days in Daytona Beach for the First Annual Baby Boomer Girlfriend's Spring Break. Everyone has been asking me, "How was it?"

It's really hard to describe in words because there were so many different things going on. It was a non-stop weekend. It was nothing short of incredible to finally meet some of the baby boomer divas I've been networking online with for more than a year. You would’ve thought we had known each other for years. Actually it felt like a sorority sisters reunion. And when you add in Baby Boomer Actresses Bern Nadette Stanis and Jo Kelly, you get a star-studded event designed for Queen Divas.

One thing I've discovered is, we are truly a group of fabulous 40 and beyond women. Just click on the title of this blog (Baby Boomer Divas on the Move...) and see what I mean.

An Anorexic Baby Boomer Diva? Never!

I used to be a size 0. That’s when I was a cart-wheeling, straddle-jumping, booty-shaking teenage cheerleader. These days I’m a size “nunya.” What’s that, you ask? It’s better known as the “nunya business---don’t ask me again” figure. It’s a size Ann Taylor needs to pay close attention to if she’s going to seriously market to baby boomer women.

While doing my morning walk/run on the Duke University cross-country trail today, I resigned myself to the fact that some of these extra pounds I’ve packed on over the last 10 years are NEVER going to come off. My doctor told me it is important to keep in mind that this weight gain is normal and to be expected. Studies have shown that about 90% of menopausal women gain some weight between the ages of 35 and 55. But you may not necessarily have to blame yourself for this newly acquired weight - research now shows that weight gain during menopause is caused by shifts in your hormones, not greedy eating.

So you know what? I can accept that fact as long as I feel good about who I am on the inside and I feel great! Furthermore, I do believe it’s alright for a baby boomer diva to have some meat on her bones because it’s how you work what you’re workin’ with that counts!

Say It Loud---I'm a Baby Boomer Diva and Proud!

Who would’ve ever thought a few months ago that something called the Baby Boomer Diva Web of Fame would turn into what it is today?

I had the idea back in March after meeting Singer Natalie Cole at a Women’s Empowerment Convention. I told her she would be one of my DIVAS on my website. Then I started thinking of other women I’ve come in contact with, on and offline….women I have come to admire and respect. Women in my age group who were on the move and doing what they could to make a difference personally and/or professionally.

That was the birth of the Baby Boomer Diva Web of Fame. I started out with a half dozen women. It’s now turned into 47 with 12 celebrities. Song-writer Carol Bayer Sager, Actresses Rene Russo and Linda Hamilton, Country Singer Trisha Yearwood and Sharon Osbourne are the latest to be included among the exclusive list of women who make up the Diva Web of Fame. I anticipate 100 women before the end of the year.

Wow! I have truly been blessed!!! Just last year I got fired from my good-paying television news job for writing Whatever! A Baby Boomer’s Journey Into Middle Age. I’m still struggling financially but oh, I am so much happier because I am truly pursuing my PASSION! Menopause isn't going to slow me down from enjoying what's left of my life.

And for those of you who can appreciate this: God told me all I needed was the faith of a mustard seed.

Tips for Keeping Your Cool this Summer

Exercise is what keeps a baby boomer diva looking like a DIVA. Working out regularly plays a key role in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Even if you don’t have a membership to a health club, you can still get a good workout in by doing it outdoors. Here are some tips to help my fellow baby boomer divas keep it cool while exercising:

1) Workout either first thing in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is starting to do down.

2) Stop and rest as needed if exercising in the heat makes breathing difficult. Some people like to carry bottled water. You should drink plenty of water before and after you exercise. STAY AWAY from drinks with caffeine because they can cause you to lose fluids.

3) Pay attention to your body. Be on the lookout for signs of a heat-related illness such as dizziness, nausea, severe headache or light-headedness.

4) Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing. You may want to look cute but look good and comfortable instead of wearing something too tight and feeling miserable.

5) If rain catches you by surprise, alter your game plan by walking in the mall or exercise along with a fitness video at home.

Finally, enjoy the company of a fellow diva while you exercise. Here’s to your good health!

Happy Family Barbie Grandma? Whatever!

My baby boomer girlfriend Angela hipped me to something today in her blog (www.angelabetts.com) I wasn't aware of and now I'm on my soapbox (thanks Angela)

I want to go on the record as totally objecting to Mattel's introduction of the Happy Family Barbie Grandma!!!

Who in the world is calling the shots at Mattel that they would think this is an acceptable product? I bet it's some youngster under 40 who doesn't have a clue about the baby boomer generation. We are the grandmas---we are baby boomer divas---and many of us don't look like the version they have depicted. The majority of "grandmas" I know are in the business world. They are sophisticated and savvy. We go to the Spa and work out at the gym. And Lord knows, the vast majority of us aren't looking like we're ready to retire at any moment. We don't have to hide our figures by wearing those grandma-looking sweaters and baggy polyster pants.

It's just like 50 years ago when they brainwashed us into believing that the only example of a "cute" doll was one who was white with long blonde hair. Now Mattel adds further insult to injury by doing this.

A doll like that might've been great for our generation when we were growing up. The family unit was different back then. Our grandparents looked somewhat like the image they're depicting. But it is totally unacceptable now. Mattel ought to be ashamed for introducing such a figure to the American public. I am starting a petition to get them to remove this doll image from their product line.

But if there's any consolation to this whole thing----she ISN'T BLONDE!

What's Up with the Baby Boomer Drama?

David Hasselhoff has become the latest celebrity baby boomer to show a less than flattering side to America. In a video recorded by his daughters and shown on You Tube, the former Knight Rider star is shown lying on the floor in a drunken stuper and trying to respond to a voice off camera regarding his alcohol relapse. He is also trying to eat something off the floor in the process.

Just a few weeks ago, we heard the voice of boomer Alec Baldwin ranting in a cell phone message to his daughter.

I am, personally, appalled at the behavior of these two men but I am OUTRAGED that their wives appear to have driven them to the point of being out of control. Why must their marriages end so bitterly? Is it over money? Bad sex? Infidelity? or a combination of everything? Well, whatever the case, there should be no reason for these baby boomer women to drag their former lovers through the mud because whether they realize it or not, they're dragging themselves as well and they may get up even dirtier.

These kinds of antics may have been a part of our twenties but you would think that we grew up and learned from the error of our ways. A word of advice to Pam and Kim: Ladies, get over yourselves and find another way to make some headlines. You're giving the rest of us baby boomer divas a really bad name!

But then again...maybe it ain't personal, it's menopause.

Baby Boomer Divas are NOT Self-Absorbed

Despite what the critics might say, baby boomer "divas" are not self-absorbed. At this stage of life, it's about supporting each other because we're all on a similar journey.

With that being said, I just wanted to give a shout out to some fellow "D"ivinely--"I"inspired "V"ivacious "A"nnointed Sisters who are women on the move and making a difference. First of all, please, please purchase a copy of "Real Women Wear Red" from my dear friend Kathy Holmes (www.kathyholmes.net). Her book was FINALLY released this week. Kathy was one of my biggest cheerleaders when my book, Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey into Middle Age, was released last year. Also, when you buy it, make sure you tell her I told you to :)

Another DIVA friend of mine, Tracy Lewis, is hosting a teleseminar on Tuesday, April 3. She'll be discussing aching muscles, Breast tenderness, headaches/migraines as it relates to menopausal symptoms. Here is her information:

DIVA Carine is always cooking up something with her colorful articles. Stop by and visit her at www.carine-whatscooking.blogspot.com and a new DIVA friend of mine, Dee, keeps it real on her blog: www.minniepauzblog.blogspot.com

Yes, we DIVAS are the bold, bodacious and the beautiful and we're not afraid to let you know about it!

Drugs, Sex and Rock-n-Roll

I love talking to fellow baby boomers. I am always fascinated at the various roads we traveled on to get where we are today. I had the pleasure of talking with a man named Alton Cooley earlier this week.

We actually met online. Now before you start trippin' let me tell you that I'm a happily married woman and based on my conversation with Alton, he's a very happily married man to a good woman. We are both a part of a networking group (Nextcat.com) that includes artists from various areas like music, theatre, authors, singer, etc. I was interested in connecting with him because in his profile he said he was from Ohio and so am I. As a matter of fact, our cities are relatively close to each other.

Alton is a baby boomer who’s been doing what he loves for the past 30 years. He says he started doing it in his garage. He’s been shot at while doing it and he’s even done it in the nude! Yes, you read this right..in the nude…and it isn’t sex. The best part of it all, he says, is he gets to do it with his friends. You’ll have to listen to this podcast to see exactly what it is that he loves doing.

You can access it by going to: http://www.talk2bevpodcast.com/podcast/ or http://www.successtalk.com/whatever

Also, don’t forget about the Women’s History Month Contest for the chance to win some cash prizes. Go to: www.thebabyboomerdiva.com

Can You Afford to Live after Retirement?

We Baby Boomer Divas love to shop til' we drop! But I've recently discovered that I may end up passing out and be in need of some serious resuscitation when it comes to looking for a place to live out my golden years.

Unlike the old days when people just migrated South because of the nice, warm weather, I'm not necessarily looking for the warmest climate but I am looking to go where the action is. Retired does NOT mean dead so I want to make sure I'm in a place that is thriving with lots of night life and entertainment. But it looks as though the places I would be considering at this time are way out of my price range.

Take SAN FRANCISCO for example:

Typical monthly mortgage payment: $3,536. And that's only to live in the house. Never mind the furniture, transportation, groceries, parties, etc.

Then there's the beautiful suburbs of OXNARD-THOUSAND OAKS where the typical monthly mortgage payment is $3,252.

Dionne Warwick once asked the question, "Do you know the way to SAN JOSE?" Well, looking at a monthly mortgage payment of $3,668, coupled with a property-tax payment of $308 makes me glad I don't know how to get there!

And why is it that 7 out of the top 10 most expensive places to live in the U.S. are all in California? Hasn't anyone told real estate developers out there that the whole state is going to fall into the ocean soon? Shouldn't that mean we could get record deals on housing?

It doesn't get any better if I want to retire in the city that never sleeps. The typical monthly housing payment in New York is $2,262.

Well at these prices I might just have to stay right where I am.
