The Marriage Between NASCAR and the Confederate Flag is Over

As a 60-something year-old woman, I used to say I never thought I'd see the day when we would actually elect a black man for President.  Then, lo and behold, young people in this country decided it was time for REAL CHANGE and galvanized to elect Barack Obama as our 44th Commander-in-Chief.

Another thing I never thought I'd live to see was the dissolution of the relationship between NASCAR and the confederate flag. That happened on this date June 10, 2020.
The move came after the only black driver on the NASCAR circuit, Bubba Wallace, came out two days earlier urging officials to ban the flag from all events. (I have to admit I didn't know he was black with a name like Bubba) But it's like that old E.F Hutton commercial, remember:  "When E.F. Hutton Speaks, people listen..."

NASCAR statement

"The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”

What I found interesting about this statement is that it called their events a "welcoming and inclusive environment for ALL fans..." and that the flag was a deterrent.  I don't know about you but I never thought of NASCAR as a welcoming environment for anyone other than lower class and rural whites.  I certainly could be wrong about that but at the one and ONLY race I ever went to I felt like I was in the midst of a KKK rally and everyone communicated  like they only went as far as the 6th grade. I've never understood why the flag was always associated with their sports racing events. 

But now NASCAR has jumped on the bandwagon of those companies who are attempting to march in step with the current climate of the country.   For more than two weeks (as of this writing), people have taken to the streets all over the country and around the world to demand justice for the police killing for George Floyd and against systemic racism.  Young, old, black, white, Asian and Latino are raising one shared voice, which hasn't been heard in more than 50 years.

This is a good move for NASCAR but I'm wondering what the fallout will be.  You see, the confederacy still has a stronghold in some places, primarily the South. And NASCAR is REALLY BIG in Darlington, SC, Ridgeville, VA (Martinsville Speedway), Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Motor Speedway) to name a few.  

Stay tuned for the next episode because as well all know there can be something called "reconciliation." After all, when you have a 70 plus year history with something, is it really that easy to just walk away?

Baby Boomer Obama Wins Big in NC

Despite the fact that North Carolina’s Governor went against the grain and endorsed Hillary Clinton, it was fellow baby boomer Barack Obama who came out the big winner during Tuesday’s Primary election.

The numbers are beyond impressive! Obama won a lopsided victory by more than 200,000 votes. With 99 percent of the votes counted:

Barack Obama 887,186
Hillary Clinton 654,484

What is even more astonishing is the fact that nearly 1.5 million votes were cast (by Democrats) in the race. According to the NC Board of Elections, there are 2,633,502 registered democratic voters (as of 5/7/08). More than 100,000 new voters were added to the rolls just for this election.

Never in the history of NC voting has there ever been a turnout like this. Yes, Obama overwhelmingly won the black vote, but he clearly crossed over racial lines and received a significant number of white votes as well. (The media’s not talking about that!)

Even though I’m not a fan of FOX News, they reported some interesting statistics:

74% of voters with college degrees voted for Obama
56% of voters with no degree voted for Obama

69% of first-time voters voted for Obama
61% of Obama voters were under 30 (my daughter was one of them).

Obama received 92% of the black vote
Obama received 61% of white women

The Political Boomerworld Comes to North Carolina

The baby boomer democratic presidential candidates are vying for North Carolina. The tarheel state has become important to the overall delgate count and Barack and Hillary are duking it out to see who gets the prize.

Barack, his wife, Michelle, Hillary and Bill have been to North Carolina several times courting votes.

My daughter registered for the first time yesterday. She was really excited to do so and has made no secret about her choice---Barack Obama. And neither has my grandson for that matter.

According to the State Board of Eelections, more than one hundred thousand new voters have registered. Most of them are African-American and Democrats.

Friday, April 11 is the last day potential voters can register for the May 6th primary.

I wonder will N.C. Senator John Edwards get any votes---oh, he's out of the race isn't he? I wonder who he plans to endorse.

Hillary Does Not Speak for all Baby Boomers

You know I keep saying I am not going to get caught up in the "politics" behind the politics of this election. Unfortunately, the media makes it very difficult not to.

What disturbs me about this election is how much the media is doing to sway public opinion. Even after Obama won the Iowa Caucus, Hillary was still the center of attention with their "Why didn't she win?" news stories.

Now they're talking about how she showed her vulnerability and choked up when talking about her likeability factor. Was that a news story? NO, but the media chose to make it one. Now they're going as far as to call her the "Comeback Kid." Tell me, how can that be when she was the front runner from the very beginning? The only thing she came back from was a humiliating loss in Iowa.

If there is a so-called come-back kid, it would have to be John McCain who had a very poor showing in Iowa but came back like gangbusters in NH. Why isn't the media making more out of his story?

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Hillary would win NH. The Live Free or Die State has always been the frontrunner when it comes to electing women. Remember former two-term Governor Ella Grasso?

Personally, I think the media has its own agenda to make the Democratic Race as divisive as possible and let another Republican sneak in again. He won't have to steal it this time.

The media and politics make strange bedfellows.

One more thing: One of the female commentators on CNN who labeled herself a baby boomer was quick to point out that baby boomer women in NH were rising to the occasion to support one of their own. Lady, please be advised that Hillary does NOT speak for ALL baby boomers. Just ask Oprah.

Top 10 African American Baby Boomers of 2007
