My 5 new boyfriends

In the past few years since menopause came knocking at my door, I have all of a sudden become attractive to men who wouldn't have given me the time of day 20 years ago. Now I spend time with them practically every day.

As soon as I wake up, I need WILL power to get me out of bed. Then JOHN wants to see me. After a strenuous workout at the gym, CHARLIE horse shows up and when he's around he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, ARTHUR-itis comes around. He's a party animal. He likes to move from joint to joint. After a busy day, I lie down and take a restful nap with BEN gay.

Life has suddenly gotten very interesting at middle age!

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Finding the right doctor is one of the most important decisions a woman can make as she is entering into menopause. This transition of life is one that requires a physician who will candidly discuss what it all means as well as offer all of the alternative forms of treatment. Often times, treatment of menopause results in anti-depressive medication or unnecessary hysterectomies.

Years ago, menopause was as taboo as mental illness. There was a stigma attached to women going through "the change." In his book, (published 1966), Dr. Robert A. Wilson wrote, "Many women endure the passing years with cow-like passivity and disinter; and a disturbingly high number take refuge in sleeping pills, alcohol and sometimes even in suicide...The tragedy of menopause often destroys her character as well as her health." It was that kind of attitude, from a so-called expert, that forced many women to suffer in silence, for fear of being ridiculed or labeled as crazy because of their hormonal imbalance.

But in this day and age, there is no reason women have to sit back and suffer in silence. The menopausal years are a time for us to take charge of their lives. When deciding on the right doctor, you should ask the following questions:

1) What is your health care practioner's training in menopause and in aging?
2) How knowledgeable is he or she about the menopause transition?
3) What classes on menopause and on aging have they attended or taught recently?
(You want a health care professional who's up to date on current treatments)
4) Can you talk to your doctor openly?
5) Does he or she explain things in a way you can understand?
6) Is he/she willing to consult with other professionals on alternative treatments?
7) Does your health care provider give you information to help increase your
knowledge about menopause?
8) Does he/she review the pros and cons of Estrogen Replacement Therapy and
Hormone Replacement Therapy?
9) Does he/she discuss the side-effects of synthetic drugs?
10) Is your health care provider readily available? Having to wait a month or
more may not help you.

Remember, it's your body. Keep asking questions until you get the answers you're seeking so you can make a wise decision about your healthcare.

I'm still Hot...It just comes in Flashes Now!

I started having a glimpse of what's known as peri-menopause about ten months ago. First, there were the hot flashes and then my menstrual cycle became very sporadic. My gynecologist said once I go into full blown menopause, my cycle will stop completely, to which I say “Hallelujah”!

As far as the hot flashes go, they can be very annoying and inconvenient. The first one I clearly remember having was at work right around the same time I was trying to handle some breaking news. All of a sudden I felt this intense heat rush from the base of my neck up to the top of my head. It felt like I was on fire! It only lasted about a minute but that was just long enough for me to consider murder if anyone had said something I didn’t like right at that moment.

You see, I’ve chosen NOT to suffer in silence which makes me eager to let my colleagues and anybody else I come in contact with know when I’m having a “moment.” This is their warning to steer clear until they’ve been given the “everything’s OK” signal. When Sweaty comes in, it triggers a not so pleasant personality change. I become uncomfortable and irritated. That’s when Bitchy takes over and she can hang around a long time if aggravated. Now there are some who might argue that Bitchy and I have been acquaintances for quite some time. You know what I have to say to that?

Whatever!

Who is Beverly Mahone?

Beverly ’s own mid-life journey began a little more than two years ago. She was a divorced mom attempting to raise a teenager alone, while maintaining her career as a television journalist. Then she found herself dealing with emotional and physical struggles she couldn’t quite get a handle on. The struggles of weight gain, forgetfulness, mood swings and depression seemed to be overwhelming at times. To top it all off, her body temperature seemed to be out of control more and more frequently. As a result of these symptoms, Beverly started a journal as a form of therapy and later learned through her gynecologist that she was in the early stages of menopause. It was at that point that she decided to reclaim her life by learning ways to overcome what seemed like a no-win situation at the time.

Prior to the book being published, Beverly ’s life appeared to be spinning out of control. Her depression, mood swings and hot flashes were getting worse. Coupled with that was the fact that she was passed over for a promotion at work by a woman ten years younger, making her feel even less significant in life. It wasn’t long after, that Beverly decided to call it quits after more than 25 years as a journalist. At that point, she became more determined than ever to prove to herself that she could overcome the fears of growing older that plagued her. She joined a health club and began working out. She started dating again and has discovered a new ministry with her writing.

"Not tonight Honey, I'm all dried-up!"

OK...that's probably not something you would say to your mate but if you're going to be honest and real, that is the case sometimes when it comes to intimacy.

As women age, there is a decrease in our hormone levels which causes changes in our vaginal tissue. It becomes thinner and less elastic. There is less vaginal wetness even when we become aroused. Sex can become uncomfortable--even painful for some. But there is relief in various creams and gels.

These are issues men don't understand unless we are willing to establish an open dialogue. It's the same with them. As they age, an erection is not as easy to attain and they don't want to let on to their mate that there is a problem. That's why Viagra was invented.

OK...So here is another reason why you should purchase a copy of Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age on November 16th.

Excerpt from Chapter One:

Some people call it a midlife crisis. I call it cruel and unusual punishment. My middle-age years have resulted in some spreading, sagging and cellulite--- while my breasts, belly and lap are getting better acquainted. Gone are the days when I could chow down at the all-you-can-eat buffets and never gain a pound. All those burgers, fries, pork chops, ribs, fried chicken and late night cocktails seem to have caught up with me. These days everything I eat goes straight to my waistline. Sometimes all I have to do is look at food and I gain weight. Over a two year period, I gained about twenty-five pounds. That may not sound like a lot to you, but for a diva who bragged about being a Miss Size Four it was very traumatic!

My doctor said the weight gain is a result of my metabolism slowing down. It’s all a part of the aging process. But there is good news according to her. “Just cut back on your calorie intake, Beverly, and exercise,” she said. “That will keep your weight under control.” Oh, that’s just great. Not only do I have to eat like a bird but then I have to sweat like a pig in the gym!
